Character Analysis: Doc And Marty (Back To The Future)
Once confined to fantasy & science, time travel is now simply an engineering problem ― Michio Kaku
The concept of time has existed since… well the beginning of time. And our little universe has lived through millions upon billions of time periods, from the prehistoric dinosaur ages, to the mediaeval era, to the old west times, the time period your parents were born in, and even right now. That also has many of us questioning what’s beyond right now, curious upon what the futures like? Sadly we have no real way of seeing what the past or future is like, we’re stuck living in our own time periods for the rest of the time we exist… Or are we? This is where one man comes into the picture. Meet Doctor Emmett Lathrop Brown. Better known by his friends as Doc Brown.
Born 1914, Emmet from a young age had always been fascinated with science, which he always favoured over his other hobbies like law school, wrestling, etc. He looked up to all the greats in the world, like Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, and Albert Einstein. His dream was to be just like them, invent something incredible that’d change the world. And he had tried multiple times. Such as rocket powered drills, automatic pancake makers, mind reading helmets, etc. All seemed to fail, and many viewed him as completely crazy for a lot of these. It was most likely none of The Doc's dreams would ever come true. Until one day in 1955, while standing on the toilet and fixing a clock, he slipped and hit his head off the sink. But just then, he saw a vision, a picture in his head. And he was gonna spend the next few years of his life dedicated to working on this project. For the next few years, he’d work and work and work on how to make this device. All while still living his normal life, attending college, inventing other devices, growing older, and getting a little pet dog named Einstein.
Eventually however, in 1982 a boy would sneak into Doc’s lab with one sole intention; Getting an Interocitor tube for his guitar amplifier. This boy was someone who was going to change not only Doc’s life, but history forever; Martin Seamus McFly. But you can just call him Marty McFly.
Marty was your average teenage boy from the 80’s. He loved skateboarding, playing wild gunman at arcades, and of course playing the guitar. But through this his home life wasn't too incredible. He had a wimpy father named George, who made tissues look like iron bars and a smoking drinking mother named Lorraine. But besides this Marty’s life wasn't too bad, especially after he met Doc who was impressed by Marty who had solved all the traps in his house. Marty befriended Doc and regularly visited him for stuff like science projects for his school, during all this Marty also began going out with a girl named Jennifer Parker, and things were mostly all right… Until one day everything changed.
Doc was gone for weeks and he had called Marty, claiming he had made an incredible scientific breakthrough. When Marty met up at the mall Doc told him to go to with a camera ready, he found Doc with a DeLorean DMC-12. This didn't seem like an invention? This was until Doc hooked up a remote control car and put his dog in the car as it took off, claiming that as soon as it hit 88 Miles Per Hour ‘He’d see some serious shit’ And that Marty did as the car suddenly vanished after hitting 88 Miles Per Hour into nothing but flames. As it turns out the experiment Doc saw years ago was something he called ‘The Flux Capacitor’ which he hooked up to The DeLorean. With this invention Doc created the world's first ever time machine out of a DeLorean. Doc was incredibly ecstatic his invention worked, and Marty was surprised and super interested. All was great right? Well there was one small teeny tiny issue. The car needed a power of 1.2 Gigawatts of energy to run, which could only be found in something like Plutonium. Which you can’t just walk into a store and buy, and Doc did not walk into a store and buy it. He stole it from a Libyan Terrorist organisation. Who then came out of nowhere while Doc and Marty were testing the invention and shot The Doctor right in the chest with an assault rifle, killing him instantly. Marty watched in despair as he took off into The DeLorean to get away from them. But all of a sudden, the car's time travel activated and he went from a mall in 1985, to a large field all the way back in 1955. Marty was now stuck in the past.
During all this Marty would be confused as to what in the world happened, where he was, and why his hometown was so different. During all this however he met a boy around his age at a cafe, this was none other than Marty's very own father George McFly. Marty, still not fully grasping the situation, tried to follow George and ask him what happened, but during this Marty saw he was going to get hit by a car so he pushed him out the way resulting in him being hit instead. Marty then awoke in a girls bedroom, taking care of him. Unfortunately for him, this was his mom Lorraine when she was younger. And due to something known as ‘The Florence Nightingale effect’ (It’s a thing where nurses fall in love with their patients) Marty's own mom had the hots for him, which meant she would never get with George and HE would never end up existing… Heavy.
Luckily for Marty, he met up with Doc Brown in 1955, and was able to convince him that he really was from the future and such. During this they would find where The DeLorean was parked, and they came up with a plan; Marty had a newspaper of a lightning strike that would go down at his town's clocktower in about a week from the day he travelled to. And since lightning was the only source they had which could generate the 1.21 Gigawatts of energy, Doc made a plan on how he’d harness the lightning into the time machine and send Marty… BACK TO THE FUTURE!
During all this however, Marty would go under the alias of ‘Calvin Klein’ and befriend his younger father to try and encourage him to get with Lorraine. His plan; The Under the sea dance at their high school. Although doing all this wasn't easy, Marty still had to try to make his mother NOT be in love with him and he had to deal with his fathers high school bully Biff Tannen. Who would constantly be a creep towards Lorraine and was in general a really big jerk, thankfully a completely idiotic one, something Marty used to humiliate Biff. Like making him drive and crash into a large manure truck. Although this didn't sit well with Biff obviously, who wanted major payback. Which he got, because while Marty was in a car with his mother, telling her that she shouldn't drink and smoke, Biff ambushed him and shoved him into the boot of a car owned by the band Starlighters. During this however, George finally stood up to Biff and knocked him clean out with only one single punch. Saving Lorraine as they went to the dance, as Marty was freed from the backseat. Although the Bass Player Marvin injured his hand during this process, Marty took his place at the performance playing Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode. Lorraine and George had now fallen in love, and Marty and Doc went to do their Clocktower plan. Although, Marty kept trying to warn Doc about the future where he would be shot, even leaving a note for Doc who refused to read it as it would destroy space and time. Even with all this commotion, Marty was successfully sent Back To The Future. Safe and sound back in 1985, and Doc was also alive who actually ended up reading the note right after Marty left because; What The Hell?
When Marty arrived back in 1985 however, he realised this 1985 was incredible compared to his original one. Due to making his father more confident, and stopping his mother smoking and drinking, they were rich, successful, and in shape. Marty also had his dream truck, and was ready to go on a date with Jennifer. Everything was just perfect… In 1985 however Doc showed up again, claiming that in the year 2015 Marty and Jennifers kids would be in complete trouble. His son would get arrested due to being involved in a gang with Griff Tannen (Future grandson of Biff) which leads to a chained reaction, resulting in Martys whole family completely fucking up. Marty goes to the far off future of 2015 and takes his son's place, telling Griff he wont show up to that night's event, being forced into a situation where he must escape them by board once again. This time with a cool futuristic hovery one! Things were well thankfully, and they fixed everything and arrived back in 1985 where everything was great once again…
EXCEPT IT WASN'T!!! Turns out the old future version of Biff Tannen listened in on Doc and Martys conversation, and heard Marty come up with the idea of using a Sports Almanac to place his bets on every single winning team in the history of sports within the future. Doc obviously wasn't a fan and Marty lost the book, but Biff hearing this took the book and while Doc and Marty were away from The Time Machine, Biff took it for a joy-ride and gave it to his younger self in 1955. And now in 1985, Biff ruled all of Hill Valley being the richest man in the town. And for worse, he killed George, was married to Lorraine, and threw Doc in jail! Marty and Doc quickly found out this had happened, and Marty confronted future Biff and found out the day he gave it. Although it turns out that Old Biff warned Future Biff for if Marty ever arrived and began to chase him down, ready to shoot him like he did his father. Doc quickly showed up in The DeLorean and saved him, as they took off to 1985. There Marty would go through many troubles trying to recover the book, even being chased by Biff in his car and almost ran right over like a pancake. But Doc saved Marty, Marty took the book and Biff crashed into Manure once again. Marty burned the book and everything seemed great again… But at the last second Doc inside The DeLorean was struck by lightning and sent all the way back to 1885.
All hope was lost, Marty was trapped in 1955 forever right? Welp, Doc wrote a letter for Marty which he gave to people, which was then passed down for years, with the letter telling them to arrive at that specific location at that specific time. He told Marty where he was, and how he was doing. Marty quickly met up with Doc’s 1955-self who had just sent Marty back in time, and with his help, found The DeLorean and was ready to head home to 1985, with Doc saying he was happy in the old west… But just then, both noticed something in a graveyard they were near. Doc had been shot in the back by a man known as ‘Buford Mad Dog Tannen’ (Biff Tannen's great grandfather) So Marty took off to 1885 to save Doc. Although it was a hard journey, The DeLorean's fuel line was damaged by Indians, he was chased by a bear, but he luckily found where to stay for the night; His great-great grandparents house. Those 2 being Seamus and Maggie McFly. During this Marty would go under the alias ‘Clint Eastwood’ (Yes like the actor) where he was attacked by Bufford and his gang, but luckily Doc saved him, and Marty told Doc of his fate with him agreeing to go Back To The Future with him so he wouldn't well… Die. And since The DeLorean lacked gas, they came up with the idea of pushing The DeLorean with a locomotive so it would go up to its speeds of 88 Miles Per Hour and head back to the 80s. Although during all this, Doc would meet the town’s new schoolteacher Clara Clayton, who he fell in love with quickly.
During all this, Doc and Marty still had to look out for Bufford, who tried killing Doc at a party before Marty quickly saved him and said he would take on Bufford as he called him ‘Yellow’ (That means Coward) Doc then gave Marty advice, saying that Marty has a life changing accident in the future due to this. Eventually though, they did need to return to 1885 and Doc ended his relationship with Clara who felt insulted, and believed Doc's story about being from the future to be a complete lie which led to Doc going into a binge at a bar. Unfortunately however, Doc is a lightweight when it comes to alcohol and he almost instantly passes out after his first sip as his unconscious body is captured by Buford and his gang. There Marty is forced into a fight against Buford, who he takes on using a bullet proof vest, quickly beats down on in a fist fight and knocks him into a manure wagon. After this, Doc and Marty began pushing The DeLorean down a spur line for the train, as suddenly Clara showed up again who had seen the model of The DeLorean in Doc's shop and found out he wasn't lying. So she took off in a stolen locomotive named Greyhound, and while trying to reach Doc in the train, fell out and was now hanging off the train. Doc quickly used Marty's hoverboard to save both him and Clara, as they took off while Marty in The DeLorean hit 88 Miles Per Hour and blasted off into the future.
Arriving back in 1985, Marty was now in the modern train tracks in a powerless DeLorean, which was quickly hit by a large freight train destroying it. It seemed Doc was now forever trapped in the past, but at least he had Clara. Marty quickly reunited with his girlfriend Jennifer, and declined the offer to a street race against a guy named Needles. Turns out this was the exact future event which would lead to Martys downfall, and Marty refusing the race rewrote the future. As Jennifer looked at a fax machine message from 2015 (She went alongside Doc and Marty, with her seeing his future self get fired due to losing his temper after being called a chicken) and watched as the text vanished into nothing. Marty and Jennifer then visited the wreckage of The DeLorean as he lamented about his missing friend… But suddenly, a large locomotive from 1885 appeared in front of them!? It was Doc and Clara, turns out Doc turned the train into its own time machine, and went off to visit Marty to tell him he was doing just okay. Amazing in fact, as he and Clara had 2 sons; Jules and Verne. Doc handed Marty a picture of them from 1885 together as a parting souvenir, as he blasted off into the now unwritten future.
Since then Doc and Marty have been on various time travelling escapades, but through each timeline one thing always stayed the same; They were best friends. They never gave up on each other and always had great faith in the other, and it seemed their friendship would last forever in any timeline, no matter how old they are or what happened. Breaking these two apart was harder than destroying the space time continuum. So whether it be the old west, the future, today, tomorrow, or whenever, Doc and Marty will ensure whatever happens in the future will be fine. And you don’t need a time machine for that, all you’ve got to do is have the smarts, the style, the right choices, and most importantly; The Power Of Love.
Before We Start
With this blog, This will be a general composite of The Back To The Future franchise. Everything from the original trilogy, to the cartoon, to the comics, to the video games, and… Pretty much anything under the sun. Hell, I'm even including Lego Dimensions and various other crossovers here, just minus the scaling to other characters of course!
Surprisingly this is actually all fair game, as in an interview, Bob Gale, the director of the original Back to the Future trilogy, was asked about the canon of the series. He stated that everything related to Back to the Future is considered canon. Additionally, he mentioned that the IDW comics and the Telltale Games serve as a sort of Part IV to the series. They not only expand on the story but also provide context and answer lingering questions, such as how Doc and Marty met, how Doc’s house burned down, and more.
So with this laid down, let's drop our media list.

Skills And Intelligence
Doc Brown
Inventing & Engineering
Doc is an inventor and an inventor at heart. Even in timelines where he tries to be interested in law school and such, he always has a love for science. Even before the obvious stuff, he made many machines all too.. Varying degrees of success. Such as The Brain-Wave Analyzer, The Static-O-Matic Electric Hair Chair, The Automated Flapjack Maker that used an experimental sawdust pancake batter, The K-9 cafeteria that used an experimental sawdust dog food, The Alpha-Wave Ionic Nullifier used to combat Cybertronians, and many, many more.
But obviously, Docs greatest invention of all time was The Flux Capacitor. It’s pretty much what makes time travel possible, which he came up with after seeing a vision due to bumping his head on his sink while standing on a toilet trying to fix a clock. I guess sometimes even the greatest ideas come from the most bizarre scenarios.
Doc’s house is also littered with Wallace and Gromit-like inventions used to do everyday activities and he’s generally always seen inventing new gadgets, and tinkering with his old ones.
Observation
Doc’s pretty observant, usually always able to tell what the problem is with something. Whether it be figuring out Marty was being erased from existence from just some facts and a picture, figuring out he made a paradox and that space and time is trying to fix itself, piecing together Biffs plan and how he was able to take over 1985, and he’s generally good at picking up on cultures of the time periods he travels to under short time spans even if he’s occupied with other stuff.
Planning And Quick Thinking
Doc’s a great planner, usually combining that planning with his knowledge in certain areas to succeed even in the most hopeless of situations. Such as when Marty was stuck in 1955, Doc used knowledge from a newspaper from the future to utilise lighting (Knowing it produces 1.2 Gigawatts) to power up the The Flux Capacitor, or how about the time Biff trapped him in his own lab and stole The DeLorean, so Doc let the audience get in his 8 passenger DeLorean to guide him, while he drove it around with a remote control to try and catch up to Biff.
Doc’s also a really good quick thinker, the best showcasing of this was when his lightning rod disconnected while he was stuck on top of a watch tower. So in a short span of time, he made a zip line to zip right down to the wire and connect the final one all while lighting struck the tower. Pretty fast for an old guy huh.
Marksmanship
Despite not looking like one, Doc’s actually a pretty skilled marksman with him learning how to handle a gun during 1855. He was able to precisely shoot a rope to save Marty, and states he could shoot the fleas off a dog from 500 yards.
Swordsmanship
One time Doc got sucked into a video game where he was forced to use a sword to attack all the dangerous monsters within. And it’s shown at the end of the episode, Doc kept those swordsman skills even after leaving. Guess you really can learn some stuff from video games.
Vehicle Mastery
When your greatest invention is in the form of a car, you should probably be pretty good when you're behind a wheel, and that Doc is. He’s used his skills in driving to quickly save Marty from being run over by Biff, or falling off a speeding car which would’ve led to his demise.
General Knowledge
Doc has really expansive knowledge about… A lot of things, as a scientist should. He knows a lot about history, various forms of science (using the goat Bill Nye to demonstrate it), he’s incredible at calculating at a fast pace, he can craft enhanced rocket fuel as just a teenager, can easily tame animals and even understand them. He generally speaks in a really descriptive way about most things, his intelligence is so good it’s commonly compared to Albert Einstein, and his son Jules who Doc very much should be superior to in intellect, used a normal etch a sketch to draw a model of the DNA molecule with every little detail when he was just 2 years old.
Doc himself when he was only 4 also knew several languages, the periodic table, the constellations of the northern hemisphere, and much more. Oh yeah, Doc can dance too.
Marty McFly
Vehicle Mastery
Marty's got a lot of passions in areas, one of his main ones being skateboarding. He usually uses it as his transportation to school, even adapting to futuristic hoverboards quite quickly as well doing good tricks on them to manoeuvre around a pursuer.
But even without a board, he can also drive trucks in dirty races, rocket powered bikes to catch up with police vans, and of course, he’s driven The DeLorean a handful of times to escape certain situations.
Trickery
Marty's main tactic if he’s thrown into a situation where he must fight is usually fooling whoever he’s fighting. Mainly with the trick of saying ‘’What's That?’’ While pointing behind his enemy, and delivering a strong punch as soon as they leave themself open.
He also likes tricking his foes into hitting electrical stuff causing them to be shocked, setting up traps and distracting them with stuff he knows they like, such as the time he got the attention of a mind washed Biff using dirty magazines, and alcohol as bait.
Improvisation
Whether in or outside of combat, Marty always uses the environment to his advantage. He’s used his skateboard to escape traps, used random boards he finds for quick getaways, thrown random objects at enemies as projectiles, made good use of giant amps to send his opponents flying, and grabbing onto the back of vehicles while riding his skateboard for great mobility as shown in the gif above.
Convincing
Along with this, Marty is a good ass convincer. He convinced a past Doc from 1965 that he really was from the future, convinced a younger version of his father George to go to the dance with his young mother Lorraine, and Marty once managed to convince Citizen Brown that he had invented time travel and got him to rebuild the DeLorean and take marty back in time.
For context on why this is so impressive; Citizen Brown was an alternate Doc Brown who never invented time travel, and instead used his brains to create a dystopian Hill Valley that he and Edna Strickland were in charge of. And despite thinking he was crazy at first, Marty used this knowledge from all his time travelling adventures to convince Brown he really was telling the truth.
Street Fighting
Despite his short size, Marty's nothing to scoff at in terms of an actual close up fist fight. He’s shown he can win street brawls pretty easily against jocks like Biff Tannen and insane cowboys like Mad Dog Tannen. Who were both far bigger than McFly.
In the games, these skills increased even more. With Marty being able to fight off hordes of oncoming enemies no problem.
Marksmanship
Surprisingly Marty's pretty good with a gun, winning a shooting range game in only a few seconds, stating he learned it all from playing Wild Gunman at 7/11. And people say video games can teach you a few things!
General Knowledge
Despite being referred to as a ‘Slacker’ most of the time, hanging with Doc Brown appears to have given Marty quite a few skills to aid him on his adventures. He’s easily solved a variety of puzzles setup by Doc Brown, combined a car battery with the wheel of The DeLorean to make a small flying platform, repaired The DeLorean multiple times, is very sneaky, and of course; has a giant love for music.
Marty’s skilled in playing the guitar, out doing people in bass battles, can keep playing while natural disasters happen around him, and has a REALLY good singing voice.
Equipment
Considering just HOW many weapons this time travelling duo has, covering it all would be hard. Especially given it’s two different people too. So for this analysis, I will be doing sections on each canon and person. With sections on items exclusively from the movies, games, comics, cartoons, etc. With Doc getting his own section and Marty getting his own section pretty much.
I’ll also mention items that come from the films but also appear in the games or comics with special functions in Movies. As they aren't entirely different weapons. Also we don't really need MULTIPLE sections on Marty's guitar and stuff lol.
Movies & Ride Equipment
Doc Brown
Colt Single Action Army
Starting off with weapons, this revolver appears to be Doc’s favourite gun. First using it in 1985 where he tried to shoot The Libyans but failed due to the gun jam, the next when he fired it into the air in 1955 to start Marty in the DeLorean off.
Winchester Model 1866 Yellow Boy Rifle
A Winchester rifle rigged with a telescope to act as a sight Doc used in 1885. A very useful gun, with a range of 500 Yards. Neat.
Bulletproof Vest
After deciding ‘What The Hell’ and reading Marty's note about The Libyans, Doc came prepared that day with a Bulletproof vest he hid under his hazard suit. It defended him from multiple AK-47 shots to the chest and successfully allowed him to play dead, which he could use to trick an opponent and get the jump on them.
Dynamite
Dynamite Doc planted to blast his way into the Delgado Mine, with a very loud explosion which Marty described as ‘Waking Up The Dead’ So it makes for a good attack and a stunning option.
Brain-Wave Analyser
Created back in 1955, it’s a large device Doc made equipped with a suction cup that he attaches to his target's head which was used to read their minds… Is what I would say if the device canonically, well, did not work. Luckily Doc crafted a Mind Reading Helmet years later which was a complete success. So mind reading is still an option for The Doc.
And as for the old analyser… Well in Lego Dimensions it does actually work as a strange stunning tool, with Doc then dropping it on you as a finisher.
Sleep-Inducing Alpha Rhythm Generator
Docs always explains how one shouldnt ask too much about their own future. And if that person doesn't stop he can use this trusty gadget to make one instantly fall asleep, recalling all previous events as simply being some kind of weird dream.
Binocular Card
A useful pair of binoculars disguised as a plastic card which also acts as a camera, taking pictures of stuff and scanning people. Very similar to the cameras we have today, I guess they got one thing right eh?
Remote Control
A remote control device which is similar to that of a radio-controlled car (a modified Futaba PCM FP-T8SGA-P to be precise) that Doc can use to control The DeLorean from far away. Suppose it could be used if someone tries to take it from him, or to use The DeLorean as a hit and run option if things get bleak.
Magnifying Glass
A Magnifying Glass Doc has that can be used to closely inspect stuff. Not much beyond that.
Marty McFly
Valterra Skateboard
A Valterra Skateboard which Marty used in 1985 as his main option of transportation. As explained in vehicle mastery, Marty is pretty skilled with the board shown by him outpacing Biff and his gang.
Hoverboard
Another Skateboard in Martys tool kit. Specifically from the year 2015… It was the 80s, give it a break.
Anywho this useful tool is a Hoverboard, which acts similar to Marty’s normal skateboard, except this thing floats around allowing him to hover over hazards and do tricks he could’ve never done before. Hell in The Cartoon, The Hoverboard appears to have evolved as it can just outright fly around, which Marty used to mimic The Ghost Of Christmas Past for Ebiffneezer Tannen. He can also do tricks on them so well, it can reflect projectiles such as… Music Notes?
It also makes for one killer footrest. One of the coolest flexes I've ever seen in a film tbh.
The Gibson ES-345
Marty's pride and joy; it's the awesome badass red Guitar he plays throughout the series. It may seem kinda useless besides making noises to annoy foes, but in Lego Dimensions Marty can bash you in with it, generating sound waves whenever it makes an impact. And he can even send out soundwaves by playing it with enough to shatter glass and damage nearby enemies.
Oh, and as a bonus; It can even break you out of brainwashing.
Colt SAA Peacemaker
A Revolver Marty picked up in 1885, which also came with a gun belt for free. Marty’s a crack shot with it, using it at The Wild Gunman and imitating Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver.
Metal Frisbee
Metallic Plates That Marty can toss at his enemies to knock them down, or disarm them with perfect precision. This aim gets even better within the video games too, hitting multiple opponents in quick succession with him now carrying several on hand.
Stove Door
A Stove Door combined with rope, which Marty used as a makeshift Bulletproof Vest.
Marty can use this to endure gunshots and play dead to trick an enemy much like Doc Brown. He’s also used it to withstand punches and as a hard hitting melee weapon.
The Walkman
A black and silver Walkman of The Aiwa Brand Model Number Hs P02 Mk2 which Marty uses to listen to rock music. It could also be used offensively if combined with his earphones, blasting Eddie Van Halen's Guitar Solo in your ear
Chloroform
An organic compound knockout tool, which Marty used on both George and Zane to make them fall asleep.
Matches
Marty Uses these to burn the Almanac Book to stop the possibility of Biff Tannen taking over the future. Could also be used offensively since… Fire.
Shared Items
Pickaxes
Doc and Marty used these tools to break through a bunch of wood and stone blocking the entrance to The DeLorean. And Minecraft has taught me they make for pretty effective weapons too.
Radiation Suits
Radiation Suits the two wore, allowing them to be safe around The Plutonium used to power The DeLorean. So to all those who plan on trying to use radiation to kill these two, it won’t work.
Walkie Talkies
Walkie Talkies Doc has for him and Marty that they use to communicate from far away. Oh also they could throw them at their opponents if they no longer have a need for them.
Should be noted, Doc and Marty have many radio based ways of speaking to each other from afar, but I won’t list any besides this as they all pretty much do the same thing.
Cartoon Equipment
Doc Brown
Wooden Mallet
A Small wooden hammer Doc uses in the cartoon. He could probably give you a good ol 'smack with it.
Extended Hand
Now time to list one of many… many inventions Doc makes in this goddamn cartoon. The Extended Hand is a strange contraption which extends out a red boxing glove that can be used to grab far away objects and probably functions as a neat grapple hook.
The Electro-Magnet
A giant magnet Doc and Jules crafted. Which by turning a crank, will attract all metallic objects towards it, like various guns and swords from soldiers in The Civil War.
Doc also has an even stronger ‘Super Electro-Magnet’ which is powered by Mr Fusion that affects entire areas rather than one area.
Optical Illusion Camera
A Camera which can cast illusions on whoever's hit by it. Such as when Doc used it on him and his family to make quick disguises, which Doc could also possibly use on an opponent to mess with their mind. The illusions also last for around 8.6 Hours.
The Sonic Garbage Molecular Redistributor
Try saying that 3 times fast. Anyways this device may look like a vacuum cleaner made using bubble gum but it’s far greater than you could imagine.
As its name implies it can be used to pull molecules apart on the sub-atomic level, essentially disintegrating the object or person used on. This device can even gain a boost when powered by 1.21 Gigawatts, it can take out something even as big as the meteor that killed The Dinosaurs.
The 3 Dimensional Holographic Projector
A home security device that makes holographic decoys of whatever to fool burglars into thinking Doc and his family are still home. It could also be cleverly used in combat as a way to give his opponent the slip.
Lighting Device
One time, Doc's son Verne believed he was adopted and after messing with his tech, came to the belief that he was the son of Benjamin Franklin. So Doc and the gang went on an adventure to stop him from destroying the concept of lightning and electrical charged stuff.
They did this by using this trusty tool, by simply cranking the rod it transfers a ton of electricity which can then be transferred through metal or someone's body to shock them or fire out a lighting bolt. Also this is weirdly not even an invention Doc made, it’s actually just someone he picked up at a Flea market… Why was it just laying around?
Invisible Ointment
You may be looking at the image above and saying ‘Fiction, that’s nothing?’ Welp you’d be wrong. Notice that floating phone? Yup that's Doc holding it.
While experimenting with an Ointment that makes warts disappear he accidently made it work TO well, as not only do your spots go away, but you go away too. Doc can still pick things up in this state, and he’s pretty much undetectable besides his voice so it’s pretty useful if he were to try and sneak up on an opponent.
Tuning Fork
While in the amazon jungle during 1532, Doc used this Tuning Fork which sends out a large soundwave to attract various frogs towards his location. Doc also carried around a few other items for catching animals, but they’re not too notable.
Magneto Sandals
Sandals Doc can wear which lets him scale surfaces like Spider-Man while leaving behind red grease shoe prints as he walks. Good mobility option, and the prints probably make for a good blinding one.
Auto Jog Running Shorts
These trusty slim pairs of shorts let Doc go on a little jog for a workout. He can switch between a variety of settings like Gentle Trot, Jog, Run and if you tamper with it, he can run at the speed of a Stampede letting him run across walls.
Brain-Wave Analyser
Yup, Doc’s got another one of these but this ones a little different compared to the last.
Instead of being a mind reading device, it’s supposed to help you locate missing ideas. But if you tamper with it or crank it up, it makes your brain so fast, it begins to drain like a battery. Leaving you at just 1%, with even a single idea making you lose all your brain power and pretty much making you a mindless zombie.
Weather Device
An invention created by Doc which Marty borrowed for his concert. When using it, the device is capable of manipulating and controlling the weather. It can create storms, lighting bolts, tornados, fog, and even large floods that can turn entire city blocks into a giant swimming pool. Pretty good AOE attack.
M.A.R.I.E.
‘’What Does She Do? I Mean, Besides Run Up Your Electric Bill.’’
Short for Memory Archive Recall Indexer and Enhancer. This device lets you recall any memory, any one whatsoever that you have learned in your lifetime. Doc can also use it on an opponent to overwhelm their mind, and once again turn them into a mindless idiot.
Full Body Oven Mitts
Gigantic oven mitts which Doc used to protect him, Marty and his kids from molten lava. Although they’re apparently pretty hard to take off, so I guess they make for a good stunning option.
Fancy-O-Dance Memorising Shoes
When Verne needed to learn how to dance, Doc gave him this useful device. With these sleek pairs of trainers, it can make the user do pretty much any dance that's programmed into the shoes, with upbeat music even increasing Doc's speed to the point he moves so fast he creates fire.
Flashback-O-Matic
With this device, Doc can type down any memory he wants to recall and it will show him a projection of it… It’s just M.A.R.I.E again.
H2SO4
More commonly referred to as Sulfuric Acid. It’s a simple bottle of acid Doc owns which he could trick someone into drinking, with the belief that it’s water just like the story he told at the beginning of the episode.
ELB Hot Diggity Dogger
A Hot Dog dispensing machine which dispenses… Hot Dogs. It can even be used to spray ketchup and mustard in your clothes and push you around with its robotic hands.
Mega Brain Man Costume
During the 1950’s, Doc tried to be a wrestler but failed pretty badly, and chose to be a scientist over it. But Verne thought if his dad was a wrestler, the kids at school wouldn't pick on him so he, his brother and Marty went back in time. But during this whole situation, Doc from the past bumped his head on a microphone. Due to this his head went pretty loopy, but after seeing his wrestling outfit Doc's mind came to the conclusion he wasn't a wrestler, or a scientist. He was the almighty Mega Brain Man!
In this costume, Doc is equipped with ‘Booster Boots’ that allow him to run so fast he can keep up with speeding buses, leap and fly over giant buildings in one go, and even lift up an entire car over his head like it’s nothing. All this combined with the incredible mind of Doc Brown makes Mega Brain man a fearsome opponent.
The Hair Cut O’ Matic
A simple hair cutting machine Doc owns which Marty used on himself. Although this does have a pretty bad effect; Your hair constantly changes instantaneously into a variety of styles and lengths, which can really trip an opponent up if they're not careful.
The ELB Pediatric Policer
A device Doc made that runs on the same rules as a lie detector. Measuring changes in blood pressure, skin temperature, and pulse rates. This even works without noise, as it can detect if you're doing something you shouldn't be doing like stealing cookies before dinner.
Chainsaw
Doc owns a small portable chainsaw. Smth, smth Chainsaw Man.
Space Suit
A suit Doc used that let him survive and breathe within the depths of outer space, he even has multiple for his whole family. Not much else to it.
Metal Detector
A metal detector. It detects metal.
Bow
A bow Doc owns which he can use in conjunction with tons of stuff for a makeshift arrow. Wouldn't it just be easier to use an actual arrow?
Doc Dummy
A Dummy version of Doc which he places in his chair, so no one takes his seat while he goes to grab popcorn.
Bananas
Monkey.
Marty McFly
Baseball Bat
A simple wooden bat Marty used when trying to play baseball. And as we all know, Baseball Bats are pretty good weapons too.
Shovel
Marty used it to dig a hole. He could also thwack you right in the face with it.
Pirate Sword
Marty used this while balancing on a tightrope. Much like the two previously listed tools, this just would obviously act as a good weapon if Marty was in a tight spot.
Net Launcher
A small catapult like device, which will launch out a present which opens into a giant net capable of trapping two fully grown gorillas.
Fishing Equipment
Marty’s equipped with fishing rods, a net, buckets, etc. It may seem useless, but you could fuck someone up with a fishing rod man.
Springfield Model 1861 Rifle
Marty used this gun when he was forced into The Civil War. The gun can reach up to 300 m/s and is generally pretty strong. Marty never ended up firing it, but it’s useful to have nonetheless.
Parachute
A tool Marty used to slowly float to the ground after jumping out the Time Train. Bro is jumping out the battle bus, fr fr.
Gum Stained Shoes
Shoes with gum attached to them that Marty wore while balancing on a rope, which allowed him to stick right onto it like Spider-Man.
Baseball Gear
While Doc did make this device, Marty is the main person who uses it. So I'll count it as a weapon for him.
Anywho this is a metal body framework connected to a pair of laser tracking eyeglasses, which improves certain baseball skills. This is done with the glasses zooming in on the ball, and the framework manipulating Marty's arms making him capable of hitting a ball so hard it goes flying over 237.5 metres. It also lets the user throw a ball so hard it sends people flying through walls, and can improve kicking dirt on the ump. Neato.
Booster Boots
Marty can also use the Booster Boots from The Mega Brain Man costume. Read its section for more info.
Universal Linguistic Translator
A translator Doc Brown made that allows Marty to translate any language he hears. Pretty useful I suppose.
Lantern
A lantern. It lets him see in the dark…. I’m sorry Marty just didn't have as much to cover as Doc did in terms of cartoon stuff lmao.
Video Game Equipment
Doc Brown
Revolver
Used in Back to the Future Part III for the Amiga, Doc has a revolver he shoots while riding on a horse. While it seems to just be the same gun he used at the start of the film, this revolver is pretty different as it can fire a wide spread shot like a shotgun. Meaning Doc's crackshot aim can hit even more things.
Rocket Drill
A tool crafted by a young Doc Brown. This baby is a large drill powered through custom made rocket fuel, that can easily shake walls (Even destroying them in the comic adaptation), and can also be used in conjunction with something like a bike to act as a booster letting it go even faster.
All Purpose Cleanser Spray Bottle
Also crafted by a young Doc Brown. This experiment was originally made as a way of getting rid of any stains on your clothes, but after Marty aged it up with Time Travel, it pretty much became a bottle of acid. Pretty useful in combat.
Lightning Clock
Used in Lego Dimensions, it’s a clock Doc can slam onto the ground which conjures up lightning bolts to surge from it and zap anyone caught in the blast. Fitting I suppose cause… Back To The Future and all.
Mini DeLorean
Doc has another remote to control The DeLorean with, although this time it’s a little mini DeLorean. look how cute it is!
Anyway, with this small remote controlled device, Doc can send it through small passages he can’t fit in, and summon an electrical aura around it to shock a foe acting as a mini taser.
Marty McFly
Bowling Balls
From the ever so beloved Back To The Future NES game, it’s The Bowling Balls… At least that's what I think they are? Welp The Angry Video Game Nerd calls them Bowling Balls so that's enough for me.
Anyway, they’re seemingly an endless supply of projectiles Marty can throw at obstacles or opponents, instantly taking them down.
Milkshakes
Pretty much the exact same as The Bowling Balls. Just a lot of Milkshakes Marty can throw.
Clocks
The iconic clocks! (The film is about time so he should collect clocks guys!)
These may seem useless, but if Martys is in a situation where he’s being erased from existence, he can collect these clocks which stops and delays the effect.
Jump Boots
A pair of shoes Marty can access that let him jump great distances into the air like Mario, with him reaching up to the 2nd story of a house.
Random Projectiles
Whenever Marty finds a star shaped object he gets these… things? I don’t know what they are, not even the actual game manual has a description for them. But they appear to be fast moving projectiles that can bounce off walls and take down enemies in only a few hits.
Dynamite
A stick of dynamite Marty has that he can set off to blow holes in rocks made walls, making his way through passages. Also the dynamite weirdly does damage to everything but him.
Health Items
As explained here, Marty can pick up pizzas and sodas enough even giving him an extra life. And in other games he also has other health items like boxes, Pepsi’s and futuristic shoes.
Invincibility Soda
A drink Marty can find in a vending machine, which upon drinking, will conjure up a force field around Marty that grants him temporary invincibility. The more Marty pays/deposits for the soda the longer the invincibility will remain. (10 seconds minimum, 60 seconds maximum)
Coin Magnet
This item summons floating coin-like objects around Marty, which allows him to attract any coins or spare change.
Kid’s Gun
Stolen from Kid Tannen, it’s a simple revolver Marty owns that he used to free Doc from some chains.
Pill
A pill made for The Citizen Program, which instantly knocks you unconscious. Marty could potentially spike your drink or food with it, or force feed you it if he was really that messed up.
Lighter
It’s a gun, in the shape of a lighter. It’s a lighter gun. Marty once used this in conjunction with some alcohol, to burn down a building Kid was hiding in to force him out.
Lego Dimensions Hoverboard
In the game ‘Lego Dimensions’ Marty’s hoverboard got a giant upgrade. It can now shoot energy projectiles, conjure up force fields that zap people, and even has 2 new forms. These include…
The Cyclone Board: This Hoverboard functions pretty similar to the normal one, except it can now spin around with so much force and speed it creates tornadoes that launch Marty's opponents away from him.
The Ultimate Hoverjet: This one is pretty similar to The Cyclone Board, except it has futuristic jet boosts which allow it to fly into the air. Sure with the cartoon the board can already fly, but now it’s even faster!
Shared Items
Flux Synchronization Modules
A tool Doc used for diagnostic purposes when testing the DeLorean, but when placed on another DeLorean they allowed him to control the time circuits of another DeLorean remotely. These can be used if an opponent were to steal The DeLorean or maybe even be used on another time machine of sorts.
Comic Book Equipment
Doc Brown
Sword
A sword Doc carried around… Albeit it was a bit too heavy for him, but he’s probably been working out since then.
Electric Hoe
An electric hoe made to cut the grass, charged with the power of a magnetic car battery. It would probably make for a great weapon too.
The Static-O-Matic Electric Hair Chair
While its existence was confirmed in the ride of Back To The Future, it’s only ever been shown in the comics so we’re counting it here. Anyway this device is supposed to be used for cutting hair more easily, but as shown with George it can be used as a pretty good electric based weapon that not only stuns you, but gives you a wicked Hair-doo.
Diving Suit
Very spoopy diving suit Doc used to protect himself from the harsh temperatures of time travel.
Radio
Doc picked this up to quickly thwack Griff Tannen. Not much else to it, just another way Emmett can beat you up.
Tactical Flame Device
A blaster from the future Doc owns which can do many things. It fires electrical fiery blasts that can spread fire, create explosions, and even shut down technology. One of Doc’s best direct weapons.
Leash
Usually used to take his dog for a walk, but when he and Marty were almost about to drown after being attacked by a tiger, he thought quickly and used this as a makeshift lasso to save both of them.
Recall Remote
A remote Doc invented that allows him to control The DeLorean from far away. It even works when the car is in a whole other timeline, meaning stealing The Time Machine is basically impossible.
The Inertial Buoyancy Displacement Convector
A device Doc crafted in 1972 that enabled solid objects to react as a gas upon being pressurized, allowing them to rise, but without the pressure or conversion from one state to another. If you want to know what that means in english; It means it makes things float.
It’s what makes The Time Trains flight possible due to its lack of future technology, and characters such as Marty have just used the device to pick stuff up, kinda like The Gravity Gun from Half-Life.
Tracker
Doc has a tracker he can use to keep an eye on Einstein and his kids. He could also potentially use one on his opponent so he always has his eyes on them.
Hover Slides
Floating vehicles similar to The Hoverboard Doc used to make his way to a Decepticon communication tower. Biff never got one though, poor Biff.
Marty McFly
Fli-Blade
An upgraded version of The Hoverboard, which functions about the same but it can be split in two, allowing it to be used by Doc too. God Hoverboards are so cool.
Trash Can Lid
A makeshift frisbee Marty can use as a projectile. It’s pretty effective against people and it, by some miracle, harms Starscream from Transformers… HOW?!
Metal Pipe
A blunt object Marty used against a Cybertronian Biff. Wasn't very effective against him, but it’s probably effective against an actual human.
Shared Items
Alpha-Wave Ionic Nullifier
A large laser rifle Doc whipped up to fight against The Decepticons during the Back To The Future X Transformers Crossover. Yes, what I said there is a real thing that does indeed exist.
This rifle is VERY strong. It has enough energy to make Cybertronians fall to the ground, and Martys even combined it with his mobility to make it an even better tool. Although, the gun does have a limited amount of energy, with enough shots making it run out of juice.
Abilities
Teamwork
"And so Marty, I now say farewell and wish you Godspeed. You've been a good, kind, and loyal friend to me, and you've made a real difference in my life. I will always treasure our relationship and think on you with fond memories, warm feelings, and a special place in my heart."
One may argue this belongs in skill, but this Doctor and Assistants friendship is something no tear in time could break.
Doc and Marty are best friends, viewing each other as family, with Doc's final letter to the future being written right to Marty telling him how much of a great friend he was. So yeah, these two are pretty loyal to each other, with a very unbreakable bond.
But it’s not just them caring, they complement each other in many great ways. Doc usually uses his intellect to create plans, with Marty using his physicality and skill to act upon those plans really well. They’ll use their own equipment to help each other out, and Marty will even go against Docs orders to ensure his safety, with Doc going against HIS own rules seeing Marty do this because ‘What The Hell’. How sweet.
Toon Force
In the animated series, Brown and McFly get put through LOTS of cartoonish punishment, with their body’s somehow being fine or just… Shifting strangely.
Marty has been tangled up like a towel, and flattened like a pancake. While Doc has been turned to plates, squashed into a jar, and was once reduced to just a head. Other characters who they should be comparable to such as Biff have regenerated from being deflated like a balloon, to being blown up and reduced to nothing by a Uranium explosion.
Broadway Force
In The Back To The Future Musical, Doc and Marty can perform some incredible numbers that force those around them into song and dance, the two even acknowledge this showing it’s real.
Trust me, It works, it works, it works! In terms of the vernacular, it's spectacular! BECAUSE IT WORKS! (The songs are surprisingly catchy lmao)
Master Building
In ‘Lego Dimensions’ due to being… Legos. Doc and Marty get some neat abilities, one of which being Master Building. This lets them craft some of the most complex machines and items in just a few seconds with minimal effort, improving both’s already incredible engineering skills by quite a lot.
Acausality
Due to their constant uses of Time Travel, Doc and Marty's minds are always intact after history gets rewritten, everything always being the same to them while for everyone else, it’s as if this always was what time was like.
Multiple Selves & Alternate Replacements
In The Back To The Future games, things really get wild. As it turns out, each time Marty travels through time he creates a temporal clone of himself, and with each fail, incapacitation, and death, he’ll come right back through The DeLorean dropping him off.
This is even crazier as not only can Marty be fine when multiple versions of himself are in the same place at the same time, but the amount of Marty’s there are is even crazier as the space time continuum in Back To The Future is stated to have ‘Infinite Possibilities’ meaning Marty essentially has INFINITE retries, and can even call upon hordes and hordes of Marty’s and DeLoreans, and if they all travel in THEIR DeLoreans, there would be even MORE temporal clones and… Man, my head hurts.
Also while Marty is the main person to display this ability, considering Doc uses The DeLorean as well, it’s unfair to assume he doesn't possess this resurrection as well.
Reality Separation
Doc and Marty obviously have a big relationship with time, and it became an even bigger and more confusing headache in the comics.
As it turns out, Doc and Marty are protected by a ‘Bubble In Time’ that protects them from The Space Time Continuum trying to rewrite itself, correcting paradoxes, and general temporal feedback. Combine this with Doc and Martys clocks which allow them to negate existence erasure on a time related level, and getting rid of these two is pretty much impossible.
Resistances
Through their adventures repairing time itself, Doc and Marty have stopped at nothing but to keep the properties of space and time safe. Even battling through some insane conditions and abilities. Such as…
Extreme Temperatures: Doc and Marty have survived in very cold climates, and Doc once even hung onto The DeLorean while travelling through time, which is VERY cold.
Diseases: Marty chugged down a ‘Fungus Experiment’ Doc was making. Fungus, if you somehow didn't know, can cause really bad diseases and infections.
Radiation: They should both be comparable to Biff Tannen, who drank Uranium and was fine, only being harmed by the explosion it caused. Their radiation suits also obviously make them resilient to Radiation.
Electricity: Doc and Marty have survived a multitude of electrical blasts. Doc has survived lightning travelling through a wire, Marty's endured being shocked by Doc's own security system, and both can survive natural bolts of lightning from the sky.
Memory Erasure: Doc and his family can survive an energy explosion from The Flux Capacitor, and energy from the Flux Capacitor can erase entire memories. Although Doc is quite literally getting his memory erased here so.. Maybe not. But their revives probably ensure memory erasure aint a way of taking them down.
Transmutation & Size Manipulation: Doc and Marty have come back from their bodies being shifted into towels, turned into paper, and being shrunk into a jar.
Incapacitation, BFR, & Death Manipulation: Read the ‘Multiple Selves & Alternate Replacements’ section, along with the ‘Recall Remote’ section for more BFR info.
Existence Erasure, Time Paradoxes, & Fate Manipulation: As explained in ‘Reality Separation’ and ‘Clocks’ section. Doc and Marty can resist existence erasure and time trying to rewrite itself via their bubble in time. Not just that, but Doc and Marty changing the past or future averts the destiny of the world, making them unbound by a causal loop of destiny the timeline has in store for them. These situations will be explained more extensively within The Time Machine section.
Support
Einstein
Einie! Docs awesome little pet sheepdog. Despite being fucking awesome, he’s actually pretty useful in terms of helping Doc out.
He’s been the test subject in a few of his projects, can disarm an opponent ready to kill Doc, can somehow drive a train and even speak to Doc himself. What a good boy.
Oh also fun fact; He was originally gonna be a chimpanzee named Shemp. Nothing too important, just a cool little fact.
Automatic House Cleaner
It’s a robot who will pick up your dishes and clean them. He could probably be used as a pretty good distraction.
Oh and do him vs The Butter Passing Robot from Rick and Morty, sure.
Mechanical Psychoanalyst
A robotic therapist who can give you incredible advice and help, even capable of restoring lost memories… Although it would take around 10 years, so bummer.
Bill Nye
Time Machines
The DeLorean Time Machine
Here it is! What you’ve all been waiting for! The greatest time machine in history!... Or well, 2nd best. But choosing between The TARDIS and The DeLorean is already a difficult choice for me.
Let’s get back on track, ahem; It's The DeLorean Time Machine. As its name implies, it’s a DeLorean. This car’s got a weight of 1.359 Tons, and can move at 130 Mph at its highest speeds. But it’s got more to it than just being some fancy dancy car, it’s called a Time Machine for a reason! So to really cover this incredible machine, I’m going to do a section on each and every item, function, and ability this time skipping convertible has in all Back To The Future media. So buckle up and hold onto your seats, cause you’re about to see some serious shit.
The Flux Capacitor
This is the most important part of The DeLorean, it’s essentially its battery life and without it, it’s just a normal car. The Flux Capacitor is an incredible device, being a ternary particle collider, that’s engineered with a 4th dimensional component that allows it to act similar to a ‘Tachyon’ with the energy creating wormholes and opening portals within the space time continuum that let it travel within it. Pretty insane for just a little symbol Doc saw after hitting his head on a sink.
Oh and Doc actually has multiple of these things if one somehow gets destroyed, and being shocked by The Capacitor erases your memories.
Mr Fusion
Previously The DeLorean needed lots of power to work. Approximately 1.21 Gigawatts, which could only be found in plutonium and bolts of lightning, but finding either of those two is pretty damn difficult, so Doc took a quick trip to the future and grabbed this useful tool; Mr Fusion.
Mr Fusion is pretty much an energy retractor that allows Doc and Marty to tap into an endless source of power for The Flux Capacitor. Even simple garbage and rubbish is enough to fuel this thing. And that energy has a lot of strength to it as well, it can power Docs Super Magnet with enough force to attract all metal objects towards it, and even powered up the The Sonic Garbage Molecular Redistributor with so much energy, it destroyed the meteor that killed The Dinosaur in one blast.
Time Travel
Kind of a no shit it can do this considering its name and what we talked about previously but, mentioning it is notable.
The DeLorean is equipped with a read out, telling you where you are, where you're going, and where you were previously. Then you just type in where you want to go on a small control panel and then you begin driving, and as soon as you hit 88 Mph, The Flux Capacitor works its magic and transports you through time itself. Hell, if the whole control panel thing sounds tedious, it's okay, as Doc and Marty can control The DeLoreans' destination with just their voice. Making for quick and easy time travel.
Elemental Control
The DeLorean can create rings of fire in its previous destination, and arrives in its new one coated in freezing cold ice that hurts your hands. Not an ability that can just shoot out like a laser beam but it’s pretty iconic and has the potential to be used against an enemy.
Hover Conversion
After travelling to 2015, Doc not only equipped Mr Fusion to the car but it is now equipped with the all new Hover Conversion modules, which grants the car the ability to hover off the ground and fly. These make The DeLorean even more useful, with Doc and Marty using it to quickly get away or save themselves from lethal situations. The cars' flight is so great, it even allows them to sky rocket into space before travelling through time.
Robotic Enhancements
For even more futuristic stuff, The DeLorean is equipped with robotic limbs it can extend out to grab stuff with. It can be used to clutch onto a target to keep them in one place, or even reach out and pull someone in as shown in the gif. The Time Machine can also summon catapults to send it flying at great speeds, Angry Birds style.
Water Related Functions
The DeLorean can travel on ground, and in the air, so it makes sense it can travel through the depths of the sea as well.
The DeLorean has various functions for water related situations, such as deployable floats at the bottom that can send it to the surface after being submerged in deep water. And when in the water it can swim around like a submarine, extend out a robotic bolt cutter to break through metallic items, and provide an oxygen tank for breathing underwater.
Briefcase Form
As a quick and easy way to hide the car (It is a collectors item after all) it can shapeshift into a small Briefcase, which can only be opened at the sound of Doc's voice or Einstein's bark. It’s also just as heavy as it would be even in this form, meaning it’d probably hurt a ton if it got dropped on you or something.
Storage Increment
Speaking of shapeshifting, The DeLorean can shapeshift into an even bigger DeLorean, with multiple seats sort of like a limo. Doc also just has a version of the car with multiple seats either way, so that's pretty nice. The bigger the better.
Electrical Discharge
By messing with it’s battery and conductors, The DeLorean can coat itself in an electrical discharge shield that will attack anyone who is in contact with it, even Dinosaurs.
Lego Dimension Features
Much like the previously mentioned Hoverboard, The DeLorean has various upgrades that you can utilise within Lego Dimensions.
The car can fire out blasts of energy, place explosive mines, surround itself in an electric force field, summon a bunch of flying robotic discs to attack anything around it, repair itself after being destroyed or self destructed, and much like The Hoverboard, it has 2 separate forms it can turn into. These include…
The Electric Time Machine: Harnessing the power of The Flux Capacitor, this version of the car can fire out bolts of lightning as projectiles, shoot spread shot energy blasts, and create an aura out of it to shock anyone hit by it too.
The Ultra Time Machine: In this form, the car activates its flight modules once again allowing it to fly, and even fire two homing missiles strong enough to blow up steel metal barrels.
Existence Erasure & Fate Manipulation
By using The DeLorean time travel related abilities, they've altered time and rewritten history time and time again to save it, causing drastic changes and various events to transpire because of this.
These include events like Doc dying to the libyans which was turned into him surviving with a bulletproof vest due to the warning Marty gave him, Doc dying to Mad Dog Tannen being undone by Marty’s interference, and Marty learning to not let it get to him when someone calls him a chicken, so he never raced Needles causing the ’Your Fired’ paper to have the text erased. Where he did this previously resulted in him being tricked by Needles into a shady business deal and getting fired from his job causing his life to collapse.
And if they alter the destiny of one specific person enough, it erases them from existence, starting with their bodies getting weaker before they begin to fade out and vanish into thin air. Although, this can take a while if the person has something protecting them, like Doc and Martys bubble in time.
Cosmic Creation & Erasure
Not only can they erase and destroy whole people, but The DeLoreans erasing capabilities can go far beyond just one person.
With the device, Doc, Marty and others have erased entire timelines from existence, created entirely new timelines, and The DeLoreaon even has the power to destroy the entire Space Time Continuum on its own as shown with Biff. Great Scott!
The Time Train
Crafted by Doc and his family in the past, it’s a steam powered train that acts as an incredible Time Machine. It runs on the same rules as The Delorean, utilising its own Flux Capacitor and Tachyon generators to travel through time. But much like The DeLorean, it can do much more than just travel through time. So let’s get into that shall we?
Flight
Right after making it, Doc equipped The Train with Hover Conversion, allowing it to fly much like The DeLoreaon.
Storage
Due to being a train, it naturally has tons of space, allowing it to store multiple people far more than The DeLorean. Hell it even has a space at the back The DeLorean can fly right into so Doc and Marty can carry both Time Machines around.
The Train is pretty much just a far bigger, bulkier, and tougher DeLorean thinking on it.
Torpedoes
With the press of a button, The Time Train can send out a large grappling hook/torpedo which attaches itself to high speed moving objects. And will not let go even if that object is travelling through time itself.
Air Manipulation
Trains usually tend to produce air through a chimney and such, but it appears The Time Train can take that to the extreme. As it once tipped over The Pyramid while flying past it, sending those on it crashing down.
Space Travel
Just like The DeLorean, The Time Train appears to be capable of space travel with its Hover Conversion. Although, it’s clear that space travel is far greater.
In one of The Back To The Future Comics, Doc drove this thing out of earth's gravitational field, to an asteroid belt, to Saturn in what appeared to be just 1 minute. Jumping Gigawatts is that fast.
Lego Dimensions Upgrades
Also similar to The DeLorean, The Time Train got various upgrades during its appearance in Lego Dimensions. It can fire out energy beams, can launch out sticks of dynamite to blow opponents up, drop even bigger sticks of dynamite which will be set off if you go near them, and it can even create constructs of train tracks. But, just like any vehicle in Lego Dimensions, The Time Train has various forms. Including…
The Flying Time Train: Sometimes titles can explain stuff pretty well. This is just The Time Trains flight mode, but it’s got some useful gadgets, like a cargo hook to lift around heavy items.
The Missile Blast Time Machine: Pretty much The Time Trains version of The Ultra Time Machine, with it now having homing missiles capable of blowing metal to shreds.
The Steam Time Car
A makeshift time machine Doc made that functions similarly to The DeLorean with it needing speed to travel, but it’s a lot more fragile compared to The DeLorean and lacks almost all of its other functions. No idea why he’d use it but it’s something I suppose.
Time Parachutes
Yes, The Time Machines aren't restricted to vehicles anymore. Doc and Marty are equipped with ‘Time Parachutes’ that allow them to travel through time with just simple gravity.
First, they’ll rise into the air with a hot air balloon, and once at the exact height they’ll drop and fall all the way down to wherever they were before they reach 88 Mph and travel through time. Once they travel, they need to deploy parachutes instantly so they have a safe trip to the ground.
Cybertronians
Gigawatt
Yup, you heard me right; Doc and Marty have access to Transformers! And not just one!
Let’s start with Gigawatt, an ex-Decepticon who joined forces with Marty, Doc, and the others in their fight against the Decepticons. He’s got a few nifty tricks. Like all Cybertronians, he has the ability to Trans-Scan, allowing him to adopt a new vehicle mode. In his case, he transforms into the DeLorean Time Machine, meaning he inherits all the time-traveling abilities that come with it. And we do get glimpses of what he originally looked like a few times. Gigawatt is also
Gigawatt is also armed with an energy gun, which he uses in a firefight against Starscream and the Constructicons. While we never see him clearly land a hit, he does pull off a cool gun twirl after the battle. For more stuff, his blueprints confirm that he even has the lightning rod from the first Back to the Future film which can come off as a whip. This also likely means he gets a power boost from lightning.
Gigawatt is also pretty smart, helping fixup Docs workshop and he can even play the guitar. Awesome.
Skillz
Skilz is another Autobot disguised as Marty’s skateboard, and he’s totally fucking rad.
While he’s not as big as the others, Skilz makes up for it with his incredible agility, speed, and mobility with him even managing to knock Starscream to the ground with a single kick, and Marty can use his speed to hit multiple targets in quick succession while flying around.
He’s also armed with an energy gun, much like Gigawatt.
Marty's Truck
As revealed at the end of the comic, Marty's truck is apparently one too. We never get to see its design, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.
Feats
Accomplishments
Doc successfully invented Time Travel through The Flux Capacitor. Becoming a renowned scientist through The Institute of Future Technology.
Marty, with help from Doc, restored his parent’s marriage and successfully escaped from 1955 back to 1985 while saving Doc’s life and making his mother and father happy and successful.
Doc and Marty have repaired the space time continuum on multiple occasions, preventing a few horrifying alternate realities.
Doc eventually got married in 1885, having two kids with his wife and living happily ever after. As did Marty, his family, and his girlfriend Jennifer.
Defeated Biff Tannen, Griff Tannen, Bufford “Mad Dog” Tannen, Edna Strickland, and even The Decepticons with the help of The Autobots.
Their franchise has left a giant impact on pop culture, being referenced in several pieces of media. Fitting a movie all about time travel is one of the most timeless flicks in movie history.
Power
Doc can…
Threw a hammer with so much force it destroys a radio in two, smoke appearing due to it.
Pulled Clara out of a giant tornado with just one hand, barely struggling as he did so.
Marty can…
Punched out Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen so hard, he went flying into tomb stones which broke in half.
Smashed through large rocks covering holes by jumping down on them.
Threw a trash can lid so hard it somehow caused Starscream to grunt.
With Equipment, they can…
The Alpha-Wave Ionic Nullifier can harm Rumble, and various other Decepticons.
The Weather Machine created a large storm over Hill Valley. (5.4 Megatons Of TNT)
With The DeLorean, they can…
Utilise The Flux Capacitor, which is engineered with a 4th dimensional component. (Universal+)
Doc states he’ll use the car to cut through the fourth dimension. (Universal+)
Can create entire timelines, and erase them from existence too.
Capable of tearing apart the space time continuum. (Multiversal+) (Check Important Notes for more information)
Can pull Docs Extra Dimensional Storage Closet, inside out like it was a coat sleeve. Which contains a ‘Seventh Dimensional Axis’. (Complex Multiveral)
Speed
Doc can…
Can move in tandem with, and react to close range revolver fire. (Mach 1.5)
Can react to and duck under AK-47 fire from The Libyans. (Mach 2)
Is capable of using and dancing in the Fancy-O-Dance Memorising Shoes, which move so fast they create fire. (Mach 5)
Ran out of the way of futuristic blaster fire from Griff Tannen.
Plugged in two wires before electricity travelling through said wires could reach him. (99%c)
Can pilot and react to things in both The DeLorean, and The Time Train.
Marty can…
Capable of avoiding and ducking his head in reaction to gunfire from future Biff.
Was able to dodge and jump around a futuristic blaster being used by Griff Tannen.
Can run faster than natural Lighting Bolts from the sky. (Mach 1282)
Can weave his way around blaster fire from Starscream and Rumble.
Their Time Machines can…
The Time Train flew from earth to an asteroid belt near Saturn in a minute at most.
Can be driven and moved around in between and outside time itself. (Immeasurable)
Debatable as this could simply be a function of The DeLorean, and not its pure speed but it’s a very useful high end.
Durability
Doc can…
Fall from a height higher than The Hill Valley clock tower, before crashing onto the ground.
Has survived being squashed, flattened, and various other cartoony injuries.
Was struck by lightning, completely disintegrating his Brain-Wave Analyzer, but he was just okay. (0.38 Tons of TNT)
Survived being inside a giant building with tons of TNT inside going off, with Doc being completely unphased. (9.6 Tons Of TNT)
As a child, got launched out of a cannon that blasted him with so much force, it sent him right into outer space. (58 Kilotons Of TNT)
Marty can…
Scaling
Biff Tannen
"What Are You Looking At Butthead?"
The loveable idiot, and the main villain of pretty much the entire Back To The Future series. Doc and Marty should very much scale to him, With Marty being able to knock out Biff with a single punch, being able to beat down on Mad Dog Tannen, and Doc once knocking Future Biff cleanout by just opening The DeLoreans doors, so scaling should be fine here. Anywho Biff and his bloodline can…
Can cause nosebleeds with his punches, even as just a child.
Was blown to pieces by a Uranium explosion, but was fine the next episode. (15 Kilotons Of TNT)
Weaknesses
Despite all their great achievements, gadgets, and strange abilities, there are some things not even messing with time can change. Those include Doc and Marty's faults.
Doc Brown
Easy To Panic
Doc is very, very, VERY easy to panic. If he hears something that he thinks is impossible or difficult, he goes into a full state of shock and panic. Sometimes if he sees something he doesn't believe, he’ll completely faint due to shock.
Lightweight Drinker
Doc can’t handle his liquor well… At all. Even just ONE sip, makes him instantly pass out and it’ll take him ages for him to get back up.
Doesn't Like Doctor Who
Marty McFly
Hot Headed
Marty’s can be pretty hot headed, and he appears to act in the heat of the moment rushing head first into the battlefield without a plan. Which could screw him over big time in the long run
‘’What's The Matter McFly? CHICKEN!’’
A very famous weakness McFly has. Marty appears to lose all self control when someone suggests he’s a coward, even his parents admit it. Although, he has gotten over it over time but it's way too iconic, I can’t just not bring it up.
Marty McFly Williams Did Not Bomb That Master Hill
Equipment
Lightning
If Their time machines are struck by something strong enough to generate 1.21 gigawatts like lightning, it will force it to travel in time. The DeLorean also still needs gas, and can be destroyed with enough physical damage.
2015 Was A Complete Lie
"Doc, it seems like 2015 kinda sucks."
Important Notes
Here I will list some important notes and information about Back To The Future vs wise for anyone here wanting to take a crack at using these 2 in a vs matchup.
Back To The Future Cosmology
Okay before we start this, I do wanna point out. I am more of a Marty McFly then a Doc Brown when it comes to actual cosmology and stuff, so if I get anything wrong here I apologise. But this is just according to my research and some help from friends who understand the cosmological side of versus far more than I do. So yeah, here we go.
Anywho, of course the silly time travel film has a cosmology! Why wouldnt it? Through this whole analysis you have probably seen me mention stuff about the BTTF cosmology a few times, so here I will explain its actual size and such. So let’s start.
Timelines
In Back To The Future, the future is both an unwritten and always changing point in time, with any action that Doc and Marty do changing and shifting it. and entirely brand new timelines can be created at a whim using time travel. Which places Back To The Futures timelines at where most timelines are; Universal+
The Space Time Continuum
As it turns out, Back To The Future's version of the space time continuum is HUGE, much larger than ours. As stated by Doc in The Transformers crossover, the space time continuum contains ‘Infinite Possibilities and Timelines’ Timelines are their own space-time continuums, so with the fact that Back To The Futures universe contains an infinite amount of these makes there version of the space time continuum greater than ours. There is an argument of this also getting higher, possibly 5D if you were to take it a step further. However, Multiversal+ is overall much safer, with BTTF’s space time lining up pretty well with what's generally agreed upon to be Multi+
Higher Dimensions
Yup, it has higher stuff as well. Back To The Future not only shows a fourth dimension existing within its cosmology, but the seventh one too even referred to as an ‘Axis’. All being contained in the third dimension Doc and Martys adventures take place in. Which places Back To The Futures cosmology at 7D/Complex Multiversal.
Transformers Stuff
There’s indeed an argument Back To The Futures cosmology can get even HIGHER that was brought up to me. It’s shown that Back To The Futures space time continuum contains universes where they meet and crossover with The IDW Transformers, which has the potential for them to scale to IDW Transformers cosmology. Which can get pretty damn high, although I personally do not really buy this, as I think cross scaling cosmologies is a bit messy. Plus this is a Back To The Future Blog, not a Transformers one. I’d rather not make their high stuff be from a crossover if that makes sense. Just putting this here for any of those who do buy this.
Physical Stats Scaling To The Time Machines?
With all this impressive stuff laid out. I should probably talk about one big thing; Do Doc and Marty ACTUALLY scale to all this? Obviously we know their time machines can, mainly The DeLorean with its various statements of being 4th dimensional, creating timelines, ripping apart the space time continuum, and even unravelling the 7th dimension like a coat sleeve. But can The Doctor and his rockstar assistant scale to any of this? Welp, I'll explain my personal thoughts on it and let you choose what you want to believe.
First off, in terms of speed Doc and Marty should 100% scale to the DeLorean and Time Trains speed feats. Doc can turn around speeding cars while driving in The DeLorean, and while chasing a Mr Wisdom in The Time Train, who had stolen The DeLorean, was able to make a swift turn to pursue him. Considering Mr Wisdom was trying to get away from Doc, it is likely he was going full speed, and it’s also likely Doc was going full speed too since he had just stolen his greatest invention.
In Martys case, he is capable of reacting to natural bolts of lightning striking down upon him in the video game, all while driving the car. With him swerving and darting his way around each strike, and it’s also in the context that he’s trying to get home. So once again, it’s very likely Marty is going full speed here. This means Doc and Marty should scale to The Time Trains FTL - MFTL Speeds. Backed up by Doc and Marty’s relativistic wire feat, and the two avoiding laser blasts in The Transformers crossover.
Now what about Doc and Marty's actual Strength/Durability? Can it scale? Welp, this one is also possible surprisingly. In episode 4 of The Back To The Future animated series titled ‘Witchcraft’ Doc, his wife, and his 2 kids are inside The Time Train, as suddenly an egyptian man chasing them throws a spear right into the train, impaling The Flux Capacitor as an energy surge begins to happen that causes The Flux Capacitor to instantly explode. And this explosion was so potent, it sent The Browns into another timeline. 1692 to be specific, which is why the episode is titled ‘Witchcraft’ So, what does this mean?
Well for one, this means Doc and Marty should at the very least physically scale to The DeLoreans energy destroying the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. As Doc rewired Mr Fusion for this feat, which is what powers the time circuits within The Flux Capacitor. Although, scaling Doc and Marty to the Sub-Atomic version of this feat is up in the air, as that was partially due to The Sonic Garbage Molecular Redistributor. But considering The DeLoreans energy keeps your entire molecular construction intact after travelling, you could argue it. So yeah, Doc and Marty are at the very least 72 Teratons of TNT (Country) or maybe even 819 Zettatons Of TNT (Planet) Which is already pretty frickin good.
Now let’s dive into the high tier arguments for this feat. For one it is The Flux Capacitor exploding, which has been stated by Doc himself to be engineered and powered through a 4th dimensional component. And the feat did send Doc crashing into a whole other time period, showing it was a cosmic like explosion rather than just a normal kaboom. Meaning Doc and Marty have a very viable argument of being Universal+ in just their physical stats. Which once again, is fucking insane.
There is also the argument that Doc and Marty could scale to The Complex Multiversal coat pull, as The Flux Capacitor is the reason the car can do most of the things it can do. But I'm a bit dubious on that, as that feat didn't really have anything to do with The Flux Capacitor, but an argument can still be made for it. And still, having a LCM car at your beck and call is still really overpowered.
So TLDR; Doc and Marty can scale to The Time Machines speed feats, can scale to its calculable feats, and even its Uni+ Ones. With anything above that being a bit dubious. But that's just my thoughts, feel free to think whatever you think reader ^^

Ending Notes
Thank you for reading this all the way through! Or just skimming to the end of the analysis. That's fair lmao.
Really hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I loved writing it! Back To The Future is actually my personal favourite movie ever! So making this thread was really nice, talking about my favourite movie ever and finding out its two incredibly well written protagonists are far stronger than meets the eye is… Pretty cool!
I wanna quickly thank Spycrab and Niko/Girlkisser for some of the calcs (Love you Niko! Not Spycrab though he’s dumb) and 76SUP's Gigawatt respect thread which helped with a lot of the imgur links here. It’s been hard working on respect threads and blogs, considering school and stuff and I am thankful for those who have followed my blogs for a while. And considering the backlash on my last one, I hope this one at least gets some love ofc! But yeah.
As for the next time? Welp. I have quite a lot of ideas, but I’ll need some time to choose because, well… School is a bitch. But I can assure you both Fiction Fight Vs Blogs and Character Analysis have some real treats in store that I hope you’ll all love!
So, i’ll see you all in the future soon. Have a good day, evening, night or whatever depending on where you are. This is Fiction signing off. Goodbye ^^
